To Talk or Not To Talk

Many people wonder whether or not they should talk to their masseuse while getting a massage. Like many other spa treatment questions, the answer is up to you!

It’s usually best to close your eyes, lie back and relax into the massage, but ultimately it’s up to you. Be sure to speak up if you’re feeling too cold or too hot, if you experience any pain or if you would like the massage changed in any way.

Massages are intended to make you feel better – therapists would much rather you tell them what isn’t right rather than keep a stiff upper lip and not return because you didn’t enjoy your experience.

While in a massage, you are encouraged to speak to your massage therapist about the pressure of the massage.  Let them know if you’d like it a little deeper or to lighten up a bit on certain areas.  Other that, there is no need for further communication.  This is your opportunity lay there, relax and enjoy your well-deserved massage!

In the end, the massage is for your enjoyment and relaxation. If you prefer silence, your masseuse will abide. However, if you enjoy small talk, feel free to chat with your masseuse. Their job is to make your spa experience as enjoyable as possible!

Do you prefer small-talk or silence during your massage?

Find Your Inner “Spa Voice”

If you are in a spa setting that is communal (ie: manicure/ pedicure room, intention room, etc.), be careful how loud you speak, and the topics that you speak about with your service provider and/or others in the room.

Imagine having a relaxing pedicure while the lady next to you blabs about “the latest gossip” or worse yet, talks about her aching corns! A spa environment is sacred, and to disrupt it with gossip, banter, loud voices or rude comments spoils it for everyone.

If you’re a chatty Cathy yourself, then just try to relax, practicing some deep breathing exercises. Breathe in slowly through your nostrils and breathe out slowly through your mouth. Listen to the music, close your eyes and enjoy the moment.

Being considerate is essential.

Cell Phones

Don’t embarrass yourself and disrupt the quiet by forgetting to silence your cell phone. To some people a spa is like a church: a sacred place they go to seek solace, peace and most of all, quiet. Remind yourself to turn your phone to vibrate, or even off altogether, before you enter the spa.

When enjoying services at Bella Vita, we kindly ask that you use your “spa voice” and turn off your cell phones.  There’s nothing relaxing about being in the middle of massage or facial and hearing phones and loud voices interrupted your quiet time.  Use your time at the spa as a get away from your busy week and enjoy an hour or so of peace and quiet.

Arrive Early to Appointments

It’s important to arrive early to any spa appointment you have at Bella Vita!

It’s especially important to arrive early if you are a new client. Oklahoma State Law requires that paperwork be filled out for each client that we provide services to. Arriving 10-15 mins early gives you a chance to complete the paperwork.

Arriving early ensures that you complete all the necessary paperwork, and that this process doesn’t cut into your spa time!

This will also give you time to change into a robe, enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine and relax before your services begin.

So be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to your next appointment to get the most out of your spa experience!

Hot Head Hair Extensions

Hot Heads Hair Extensions

We love the look and feel that the Hotheads extensions create. Our stylist are skilled in providing a beautiful look that will not only make your hair stunning, but also give your self esteem a big boost too!  We’ve heard it all when it comes to what people think about hair extensions. Let’s dispel some myths right now!

Myths About Hair Extensions-

1. Extensions are only for people that want long hair.
While long hair is a perk to having extensions, it’s not the only reason. If you have thin hair or need more volume in certain places, extensions are your friend!  Take, for example, the two pictures above on the left side. The top picture is a sample of what adding more volume would look like.  The lady in the bottom picture was dealing with the side effects of chemo and was ready to give her hair a boost after her treatments were completed. She considered the extensions a boost of self confidence!

2. If I get hair extensions my hair will stop growing.
Keep calm. This is a myth. Your hair will grow as usual, hair extensions do not affect your hair’s growth. Some people’s hair grows faster and others slower, this has nothing to do with hair extensions.

3. Hair extensions will damage my natural hair
This is a common myth which can be true if you don’t do things right!  Hair extensions shouldn’t damage your hair, but it is important to attach and remove them in the correct way, to take care of your hair and to use tools designed for the purpose.

4. People will see that I wear extensions
Yes, of course they will show! Going into a salon with short/thin hair and coming out with long, thick locks will certainly get noticed!!  You will have traffic-stopping hair!  But people will not discover any visible edges. Hair extensions are almost invisible to the human eye.

Spa Etiquette : Think Ahead!

WHY YOU SHOULD SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS AHEAD OF TIME/PRE-BOOKING:

1. Get What You Want

Scheduling in advance ensures you get the day/time that works best for you.

When you don’t pre-book, sometimes it can be hard to get the day and time you want. It’s a real drag to want a massage and have to rearrange other stuff or rush around just to make it happen. Plan ahead and you can always adjust if need be!

2. Prioritize Your Self-Care

Scheduling in advance gives priority to your self-care. Many of our clients have found that when they pre-book their next appointment(s), all the other pieces of their life settles around their self-care, instead of competing with their self-care.

When we hold time for something, we tend to follow through. And when we don’t hold time for something, it tends to get lost in the shuffle. By prioritizing your self-care, you’re investing in your own well-being.

So why do we always ask if you want to rebook your next appointment when checking out? Because most of our clients have standing appointments every 4 to 6 weeks.  If you don’t think ahead at least 4 weeks, you will have a difficult time getting the day and time you prefer.  So book ahead and save yourself some frustration when calling to make your next appointment!

Spa Etiquette : Modesty Draping

Many clients, even those that have been getting massages for years, are unsure about how much they should disrobe for their massage. As with so many things, the answers vary.

The most important thing is for you to be comfortable and able to relax on your spa day. It’s also important to remember that no matter you how much you disrobe during a professional massage, you’ll always be draped with a sheet or towel so only the area being worked on is uncovered. You can also request that certain areas are avoided during massage.

Our therapists use a technique called modesty draping; this uses an additional sheet during the massage to protect your modesty. Modesty draping is used so that the client won’t be “exposed” during the a deep massage or a relaxing Swedish massage.

So relax, we’ll always have you covered!

Extra Tips:Thigh_Massage

Ladies – it’s best if you remove your bra. Occasionally massage oils and lotions can stain delicate fabric. It’s also more difficult to work the length of your neck muscles with bra straps in the way (many neck muscles attach to your shoulder blade or vertebrate in the mid-back).

Guys – if you want to leave your underwear on during a mens spa service, it’s better if you don’t wear the long boxer briefs that fit snugly around your upper leg. Those make it tough to fully work on your quadriceps, hamstrings, and other leg muscles. Briefs or traditional boxers are a better choice.

And remember, when in doubt – ASK!

Surviving Spring Allergies

It’s probably safe to say that most people are excited when the weather begins to change and Spring blossoms. But the nicer weather can present a challenge for many who have spring allergies.

April through June are particularly tough, as they often bring watery eyes, runny noses and endless sneezing with their warmer temperatures.

The key culprits are the tiny, airborne pollen grains that come off trees, weeds and grasses. Another allergy trigger, outdoor mold spores, is found everywhere.

Pollen and mold are hard to avoid when you want to go outside and play, but there are numerous ways to alleviate allergy symptoms.

Here are Some Helpful Do’s and Don’ts for Coping with Spring-Time Allergies:

DON’T:
  • Don’t open the windows of your house and car during peak pollen times.
  • Don’t let your pets (especially long-haired ones) sleep in your bed as they can carry pollen in their fur.
  • Don’t stress. Stress causes your cytokine (the protein we produce as part of the allergic response) levels to raise thus increasing allergy symptoms.
DO:
  • Do switch up your allergy medications. You can become insensitive to medication after taking it for 4-6 weeks. You’ll want to switch to a different medication for around 2 weeks and then go back to your regular brand.
  • Do use Clear My Head products to help relieve congestion and boost your immune system.
  • Do change your air filter before each new season to remove pollen, dust and mold.
  • Do take a shower before you go to bed to rinse pollen off your hair and body.
  • Do get a Sinus Facial that relieves sinus pain with a pressure point massage, steam and eucalyptus aromatherapy.

Why We Give

“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind. ”• Henry James

It’s November, the month of giving and thankfulness. Let’s slow down a minute – before the busiest of all seasons arrives- and take a minute to be grateful.

We are aware of the fact that life is better than we deserve.  The world is full of pain and suffering, hardship and turmoil, disappointment and regret. So the fact that we can be thankful and mean it is, in its own way, a small miracle.

Being grateful is a choice.

We’re learning there is a responsibility that comes with privilege. That we are blessed to bless. Gifted to give. We are not lucky, fortunate, or merely disciplined; We are expected to do something with the grace we’ve been given. And so are you.

What you give comes back to you.

When you run your family or business to serve others, benefits will come. Instead of thinking of how you can benefit, lead with a giving mentality of serving others. Giving often ends up benefiting you financially. Take a look at Sara Blakely, entrepreneur and owner of Spanx.  She believes what goes around, comes around. She measures her ultimate impact by what she gives as well as by what she gets. She creates a giving culture at Spanx. Employees, not just executives, run the philanthropy board, research potential grantees and deliver checks to organizations the company supports. Sara shares more than company profits; she shares the spirit of giving. This kind of inclusive participation is a model families can use as well.

Here’s a cool thing…giving is proven to be scientifically good for you! Take a look at this article.

How we give.

You’ve see in every newsletter this year the places that Bella Vita has given to. Not only are we supporting our community, we’re making smart choices when it comes to the services and products we provide.

FarmHouse Fresh, the creator of the amazing all natural products we offer in our boutique, dedicates hours towards animal rescues and funding local rescue groups that save forgotten and abused animals.

HydroPeptide gives back by providing clean water in third world countries

Giving back is also part of our new line of AG Hair Products. Their outreach extends all the way across the globe to Africa through our Every Bottle Counts campaign. AG is also active in supporting national charities across Canada and the US as well as local charities in their Vancouver community.

May your November be filled with thankfulness, gratitude and overwhelming kindness for where you are and what you have.

Exfoliate Summer Away!

You could be cleansing, moisturizing and even applying three digits of SPF, but your skin still might not be at its full potential. Exfoliation is an important but often forgotten step in skin-care regimes; this frequently ignored measure could be what’s standing between you and glowing skin!

What is exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. Exfoliation can be performed mechanically, by using abrasive scrubs on the skin or chemically, by using scrubs that contain special kinds of acids that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without scrubbing.

Why is it important?

Removing dead skin cells and debris is crucial for helping to treat skin conditions such as acne, but it also helps maintain healthy skin in general as we age. As part of the skin’s natural aging process, the cell turnover in skin slows down, which can lead to a buildup of dead skin cells. As a result, aged skin can look dull and rough.

Another consequence to hardening and thickening of the dead skin layer is excessive sun damage. Ever notice how tanned skin can look leathery? The skin reacts to long-term sun damage by thickening the dead skin layer which can leave it looking lifeless and uneven. Proper exfoliation can help restore glowing, more youthful-looking skin that radiates health.

How often?

Most people should exfoliate only a few times per week. For those people with the most sensitive skin, once a week (or even less often) may be all that the skin can tolerate before becoming inflamed. It’s important to never over-exfoliate. Exfoliating too often leaves the skin raw and inflamed, which is not beneficial to skin. In fact, irritation over long periods of time can actually lead to accelerated aging.

A good rule of thumb is that exfoliation should yield healthy, glowing skin, not red, inflamed irritated skin. If it does the latter, either reduce the frequency of exfoliation or find a different method of exfoliation.

Exfoliation is key in removing old skin cells and aiding in keeping sun damage at bay!
